Road Bikes
Road bikes also known as "racing bikes" are the fastest and lightest bike category and can be divided into performance road bikes and recreational road bikes.
Performance Road Bikes
These bikes generally have a price tag of $2000 and upwards and feature lightweight alloy or carbon frames/forks, and lightweight narrow wheels/tyres. Carbon frames address fatigue and vibration caused by aluminium frames without sacrificing stiffness, weight or performance. Performance road bikes have compact frame designs to ensure the best acceleration and cornering but have the least forgiving ride. Top end bikes use Shimano Dura-Ace and Ultegra or Campagnolo components and typically weigh as little as 8kg, and have 20 gear ratios suited to fast riding and relatively fit riders.

Recreational Road Bikes
Starting from $999, these are close cousins to the performance road bikes, and also often feature aluminum frames with carbon forks and/or seat stays. They are equipped with less expensive componentry and often with 27 speeds to tackle hilly terrain or offer less conditioned riders the chance to enjoy challenging circuits. The bicycle geometry is often performance oriented to still provide sharp acceleration and braking.
Flat Bar Road Bikes
These bikes are often the ideal choice for commuting and touring with lightweight frames and wheels providing excellent road performance. Frame geometry is usually designed with more comfort in mind beginning with an upright riding position. Saddles feature more padding than road bikes and a suspension seat post is often included. Bar ends can be attached to the outer handlebars offer a variety of riding positions. Frames are equipped with rack mounts. These bikes usually have wide range 24 or 27 speed gearing to tackle hilly terrain and slightly wider tyres on 700c size wheels. Higher priced bikes often feature clipless pedals.

Mountain Bikes
MTB's can be generally classified into Downhill, Freeride Cross Country and Recreational.

Downhill MTB's
These bikes feature long wheelbases and massive amounts of soft suspension travel to soak up high speed descents on rough terrain. Disc brakes with the larger 8" rotors offer necessary braking performance and wide 26" x 2.5" tyres grip when you need it most. More expensive models feature remote reservoirs for rear shock absorbers to adjust the sensitivity and improve pedalling efficiency.

Freeride MTB's
These bikes are still tough enough to deal with big drop offs and challenging descents but offer slightly less suspension travel (usually about 5-6") than bikes in the downhill category. The trade-off is better pedalling efficiency and lighter weight so you can ride to the top of your favourite descent! Again disc brakes feature widely and wide platform pedals offer excellent control in tricky terrain. Single suspension models in this category usually feature very sloped top tubes and extra beefy frame gussets to offer maximum clearance and strength for jumping and other radical stuff.
Cross Country MTB's
These bikes come with front suspension or dual suspension and offer efficient pedalling, light weight, 27 speed wide range gearing and the choice of powerful direct pull or disc brakes. They make the ideal choice for those wanting a all-round MTB with reasonable suspension travel and good acceleration/handling. Top end Team Issue bikes such as the Giant NRS Air feature carbon/alloy frames and the best Shimano XTR components. Suspension features such as lock out, adjustable rebound and preload may cost a little more but will improve the quality of your ride significantly if you use the bike on and off-road. Most bikes in this category feature clipless SPD pedals.
Recreational MTB's
These bikes start from as little as $349.00 and most feature front suspension and lightweight alloy frames. You also get quality 24 or 27 speed gears and alloy wheels with quick release hubs. Some bikes feature cable activated disc brakes for super stopping power wet or dry. This category often has a similar bike in mens and womens styles, with womens frames featuring low top tubes for easier control.
Comfort & Hybrid Bikes

Comfort bikes utilise the standard 26" wheel size found on mountain bikes with an upright riding position that is both sporty and forgiving on your back and shoulders. Adjustable handlebar stems, suspension seat posts, wider puncture resistant tyres, comfort oriented saddles and padded grips make these great bikes for leisurely riding or commuting. Wide range 24 speed gears are standard. Frames are usually aluminium and even base models feature alloy wheels with quick release alloy hubs and stainless steel spokes. Wide platform pedals make it easy to ride without special cycling footware. Top end models feature disc brakes. Hybrid bikes are similar to comfort bikes, the main difference being they use 700c wheels which are slightly larger and narrower and more performance oriented with a slight sacrifice in comfort.

Womens Specific Bikes

Woolys Whels stocks road, mountain and comfort/hybrid bicycles specifically designed for women. Womens specific designs often feature:

  • Compact frames -where there is a slight drop in the top bar, helping to step over, and hop onto the bike.
  • The frames are always shorter in the top tube than male bikes, as females generally have a shorter reach.
  • The saddles are female specific, which generally means they are slightly shorter and wider for the female anatomy.
  • The handlebars are less of a drop, and reach and we have also inserted wedges into the brake levers, all so you can reach the brake and gear levers easier.
  • The handlebars are also narrower, as we generally have narrower shoulders than guys.
  • Most bikes have triple chain rings, compact gearing or just shorter cranks. This gives you more ability to “spin” rather than grind large gears, but having gears big enough for the descents, when you need them!

Fold-Up Bikes
Ideal for those with limited storage space and requiring a handy form of transport. It typically only takes about twenty seconds to unfold and be ready to ride! models feature from 7 to 24 speeds and most are extremely light thanks to alloy frames, 20" wheels and components. Dahon, Giant and Birdy all make great foldables. To check out the range click here.
